Understanding Table Saw Classification

Any woodworker is likely to have a table saw in his studio, as this power tool is amongst the equipment most commonly used. This equipment is bulky and large and is marketed with different versions. An understanding of which type will best suit the need will greatly help in making the decision on which table saw to invest in.

Any veteran woodworker would likely suggest getting the rigid table saw for starting tools. An open base and the cabinet type base are the two broad classifications of table saws. As the term suggests, the cabinet type has an enclosed base that extends all the way to the floor, while the open base only has a metal box that surrounds its internal working parts. Table saws that are cabinet type are more expensive and heavier than the open base class.

There are four further classifications of table saws other than looking at its base. The benchtop table saw, cabinet saws, hybrid saws and the contractor saws are the four classifications available in the market. When choosing the saw to invest in, it would be good for starting woodworkers to balance durability and portability. Among the four, the hybrid table saws are gaining popularity in the market nowadays. Hybrid saws are commonly sold with a cheaper price compared to the cabinet table saw, but is able to deliver the same functionalities. This type is also capable of competing against the more expensive contractor table saws in terms of performance.
Why No One Talks About Saws Anymore

Cabinet table saws are usually manufactured with more steel and cast iron in its parts and because of this, the tool is heavier and are less portable. Accuracy and less vibration are the two features that this type boasts, which makes up for the lack of portability. It is easy to adjust and compared to contractor saws, it has improved dust collection system. The basic highlight of benchtop table saw is its lightweight feature. Beginner woodworkers are likely to appreciate its system as it is less complicated compared to other table saws. This type is also operated atop a table or any other level supportive surface. Compared to the cabinet table saw, the contractor table saw is more mobile as it has wheels. This type is also heavy and large and are more expensive. Contractor table saws are usually the type that is commonly used by hobbyists and homeowners.
